Countless ages ago, the great primordial dragons took an interest in the mortals of the world. They watched over them, cursing the wicked and blessing the innocent. Many of these blessings included granted a child to couples otherwise unable to conceive. These children were usually considered lucky, but were otherwise human. For some, however, the power of the dragons remained in their blood. Though human in appearance, they and their descendants could feel a strong divine bond with the universe. The dragon-bloods, or ryujin, often try to live mortal lives – though a few cannot escape the call of greatness and seek to further their own power.

Ryujin look almost identical to humans, with minor exception. Most often these exceptions come in the form of colored eyes – generally gold, red, jade, or sea blue. Ryujin teeth and fingernails tend to grow rather long and pointed as well.

As dragons are most often spirits of the sea, Ryujin share many aquatic traits.
