Rokugan: Return of the Jade Raven
In the magical Empire of Rokugan, death is rarely the end of a soul’s journey. After spending untold ages in any of the twelve Spirit Realms, some spirits are either sent back to the mortal realm to fulfill an unfinished task, or conjured by a mortal mystic. Most often, these souls hail from Meido, the Realm of Waiting. Arriving back in the physical world, these souls look like their former selves and can often pass as normal humans. Some of the more tormented souls, however, cannot help but reveal their otherworldly nature.
Most Reijitsu look almost identical to their former human self. The longer the spirit has been deceased, however, the greater the physical change when they return. Some ancient reijitsu have been known to appear with white skin, glowing eyes, echoed voices, or hair that looks as though it’s in constant breeze. Reijitsu also have an incomplete bond with the earth, and hover slightly. When “walking,” this is rarely noticeable, but some reijitsu merely hover from place to place – instantly betraying their true nature.
In general, reijitsu rejoin human communities and do their best to regain any honor or accomplishments they failed to obtain in their former life. Some are driven by a specific task, and care little for the concerns of society or acceptance.
Reijitsu have virtually no cities or communities of their own. The exception would be Tani Hitokage, or Valley of the Spirits, to the west. Here men and women make a long pilgrimage to pray to or even meet their ancestors, and most citizens of the town are in fact reijitsu.
Though human technically, reijitsu share a number of unique traits amongst themselves.
