Death and Seppuku

Seppuku is ritual suicide, and is considered the ultimate honor among samurai. Whether performed as punishment for failure or the prevention of capture, it is often respected even by enemies. When performed alone, it is known as Harakari. In the Rokugan campaign setting, it has several mechanical effects.

  • Performing Harakari requires a Move (to kneel and fall prone), an Action (to stab oneself) and a bladed weapon – most often a short sword. Seppuku requites an Action from an adjacent character (to behead).
  • Harakari or Seppuku automatically kills a character, regardless of hit points or resistances.
  • In the case of Seppuku, a player may create another character of equal level to replace their former one in the party – to join at a later, more convenient time. In the case of Harakari, the replacement character begins at one level below their former character. In either case, the new character begins at the beginning of the level, with no surplus XP.
  • If a character dies without a ritual – whether killed in battle, assassinated, or due to natural causes – the new character begins two levels below their former one.
